Chairman of the Volta Regional Taekwondo Association, Abdel-Fatao Hamidu, has disclosed that the new administration intends to use the media to spread the sport in the region.

Taekwondo, among many other sports in the region, is a lesser known sport.

The sport, which involves techniques to help defend oneself, has over the years seen few practitioners, with lack of finance being the main burden.

The region, although participates in national competitions, such as the Korean Cup, Junior championship and recently the first Ghana Open, lacks facilities which will enhance training and proper preparation of people who engage in the sport.

Abdel-Fatao, who began his work as the Chairman of the Association after its inauguration on Thursday, October 12, 2017 stated that their immediate priority is to develop a training facility at the Ho Sports Stadium.

“The Association is facing a lot of challenges, prominent among them is a training facility. We need a well-tailored training facility, which is suited for our activities. We have an improvise location where we train but it is not fully up to the standard of our exercises. Fortunately, the regional Sports Director has promised us a space within the Sports Stadium, so we are looking at how to develop it and that will be our immediate priority.”

As part of creating the awareness, the VTA has tailored a fitness programme for adults dubbed: ‘Taekwondo Fitness and Aerobics.”  This will give the public and people interested in keeping fit to using Taekwondo techniques. The VTA also plans to visit the various schools to further spread the sport to the youth.

Abdel-Fatao also says they will spread information about their activities through the media to help increase their membership.

“Secondly, I think we need to create awareness of our sport because that is one thing that has deprived us of membership. People are not fully aware of the benefits that can be derived from this sport. So we plan to visit the schools, especially since the target group is the students from basic and senior high schools, to create awareness. We will also use media houses to disseminate information about our activities, so as to increase our members and boost our earnest as well.”

Two out of four athletes from the Volta Region won gold and bronze recently at the national sports festival.
