Ghana is participating in the 2nd CANA Zone 2 Junior Swimming Championship, a competition for swimmers in G1 (13-14yrs) and G2 (15-16yrs) categories, involving all of West African and Central African countries (22 in all)
Day one of the completion which was on the 27th of this month had two sessions, morning and afternoon.
Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh and Kow Asafua Jackson swam in the 50 metres butterfly G1 Boys category. While Kow Asafua Jackson won silver, Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh won gold.
Ryan De Graft ended the morning session by placing third in 100 m Butterfly and won bronze.
The afternoon session saw Rebecca Gayathri Asare winning gold in the 100 metres Backstroke Girls G1 category. Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh won silver in 100 metres Backstroke Boys G1 category; Kow Asafua Jackson, the 200 metres freestyle Boys G1 category, and; Maayaa Ayawere won gold in the 100 metres freestyle Boys G1 category.
Maayaa Ayawere, Ryan DeGraft Ackun, Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh, Rebecca Gayathri Asare also won silver in the 4 x 50 metres freestyle mixed relay to climax Day 1 events.
Day two of the competition, which took place the following day, saw Rebecca Korantemaa Gayathri Asare taking bronze in the Girls Backstroke G1 Girls category and Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh winning gold in 50 metres Backstroke G1 Boys.
Maayaa Ayawere grabbed silver in 100 metres Breaststroke G1 Girls while Kow Asafua Jackson won gold in the 100 metres Breaststroke G1 Boys Category. Kow Asafua Jackson swam again in the 200 metres individual medley G1 boys’ category and won silver.
The morning session was climaxed by the power quartet (Ekow Gwira, Nii Kortei Armah, Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh, Kow Asafua Jackson) who grabbed silver in 100 metres freestyle relay G1 Boys.
Maayaa Ayawere finished with gold in the 50 metres Freestyle G1 Girls category and Kow Asafua Jackson grabbed gold while Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh won silver in 50 metres freestyle G1 Boys.
For 50metres Butterfly, Maayaa Ayawere won the race to grab gold while her compatriot, Rebecca Korantemaa Gayathri Asare, won bronze.
Powerful mixed quartet [Rebecca Korantemaa Gayathri Asare, Maayaa Ayawere, Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh and Captain Kow Asafua Jackson] got gold in 4 x 50 metres freestyle mixed relay G1.
Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumoh broke the championship record of 31. 84 set by Nigeria’s Eniyekanine Duke in the 50 metres Backstroke G1 Boys to set a new championship record.
2 records were also broken by Ghanaian Captain Kow Asafua Jackson in 200 metres freestyle and 100metres Breaststroke while Maayaa Ayawere set a new championship record in 100metres freestyle Girls.
Ghana is second in the medal table, with 13 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze.
