Close to 400 Market women over the weekend went through breast screening.

The screening exercise christened: “BOOBRISKY” was initiated by the President of Sekondi-Takoradi Rotary Club Mrs. Anita Griffiths Buaku.

“The medical screening  brought together medical doctors and counselors. The beneficiaries were aged between 12 and 79.

75 of the women after the exercise were referred to do ultra-scan and mammogram.

The participants were full of praise for the Rotary Club.

To them, knowing their conditions was important.

According to them, the exercise offered opportunity to those who had the lump but were not aware to seek early treatment which is an essential key in saving them from getting the cancer.

“I was told  I have a lump so I should go to the hospital for an examination. The doctor told me it is good that the lump has been discovered early. I will definitely go because the doctor told me they can remove it to prevent any”, a happy 56 year old woman said.

Florence Antwi who sells cosmetics at the Takoradi Market Circle said she was happy that the exercise was brought closer to her.

According to her, she always wanted to go for the check up but had no time.

Senior Medical Officer at GPHA Hospital Dr. Prince Boateng who led the screening exercise said that it was important for a thorough examination to be conducted on persons above 40 years and with a lump.

He noted that, “it is very significant for women who are over 40 years and are diagnosed with lumps in their breast to regularly visit the hospital for medical attention. Ideally not many women under 40 years are at risk of  having breast cancer but we are having such cases.  But women over 40 years have a higher risk of getting breast cancer and what we are requesting essentially is for them to do ultra –sound scan or a mammogram”.

Dr Boateng stated that some of the participant were surprised when they were told they had the lump in their breast, “because they have never thought of visiting the hospital to check up on the condition of their breast”.

“So they are very lucky to have been told of the lump. I guess they now know exactly what to do”.

President of Sekondi-Takoradi Rotary Club Anita Griffiths Buaku on her part said as a woman she appreciates how important the breast is in making the feminine complete.

According to her, she sympathizeD with women whose lives have become sorrowful due to the state of their breast.

She said it was her desire to contribute in saving homes from the pain and financial burden associated with breast cancer, therefore the screening exercise.

To this end she advised women with breast lump to quickly go to the hospital for medical attention.

She stated that “to ensure a successful end to the programme, the Rotary Club will conduct a follow up on all women who have been given a referral letter, we have their mobile numbers and we will call them to make sure that they have got the needed medical attention”.
