Ghana Health Service (GHS) has introduced a quota-system to be used to employ newly graduated medical students into various medical institutions in the country.

According to the GHS, medical doctors and dentists will from next year be employed under a quota system to avoid the reluctance with which they accept postings to work in needy areas after their horsemanship.

Under the system, newly-trained doctors will no longer be posted but apply to the regions and sail through an interview process.

Director-General of GHS, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, made the announcement at the 2017 graduation and oath-swearing ceremony for the School of Medical Sciences, Dental School and the School of Veterinary Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi last weekend.

In an address, Dr. Nsia-Asare said that the government was focused on establishing and upgrading functional hospitals in each district of the country, but this drive could be impeded by the reluctance of health professionals to accept postings to rural and deprived areas.

However, he was hopeful the quota system of employment will curb the practice of refusing postings and will enable doctors work in the regions they want to work.

Dr. Nsiah-Asare noted the condition of service for medical professionals will be prioritised and public-private partnership promoted for quality access to health services.
