District Chief Executive (DCE) of Amansie Central District of the Western Region, Kwame Asamoah Boateng, led a team of police officers to seize a total of nine (9) excavators from some small scale miners on illegal concessions in the area.
He noted that during the operation his outfit also arrested illegal small scale miners and indicated his commitment to clamp down on the activities of galamsey operators in the district. According to him, it looked as if all attempts and the announcements made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to put an end to the galamsey activities fell on deaf ears of some galamsey operators in his district. He made it clear that the communities in the Amansie Central District have had their share of galamsey activities.
Speaking in an interview with Today, Mr Boateng stressed that those illegal small scale miners who seized the opportunity to embark on their usual galamsey activities have been arrested. He stressed that galamsey activities were serving as hindrances to farming and other commercial activities in the area.
He noted that the district was now losing its status as a food basket for the nation, due to the deplorable nature of their roads and other activities. According to him, Amansie Central is one of the districts which produces cocoa in the country, but none of their communities benefited from the cocoa roads. He, therefore, appealed to the authorities to come to their aid.
