STATISTICS available from the Ghana Police Service shows a total of one hundred and fifty (150) unknown and unclaimed dead bodies at the morgue of the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra.
The worrying development has compelled the hospital authorities to give a 21-day ultimatum to the general public for identification and collection or risk having a mass burial for all of them.
According to a statement signed and issued by the Public Affairs Officer of the Hospital, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr. Yaw Nketia Yeboah, his “outfit has planned to embark on a mass burial for a bout 150 unknown and unclaimed bodies who are deposited at the morgue.”
The statement pointed out that the exercise was aimed at decongesting the morgue, which is currently filled to capacity.
It noted that the public can contact the pathology department of the hospital for identification of persons who might not have been seen for some time now.
Speaking to journalists in Accra yesterday, ASP NketiaYeboah said the hospital would not collect fees from people who may visit the hospital to claim dead bodies of their relatives.
“Nobody should worry about paying money to the hospital, it is absolutely free, all that they should do is to come to the morgue for identification and collection,” he said.
He, however, cautioned the public to go to the hospital early should anyone decide to claim a body from the hospital to avoid any last minute action(s).
