A total of one hundred and thirty eight (138) hardcore members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in various communities in Takoradi, Western Region, have defected to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Today has gathered.
The decision by these NDC members to join NPP, Today was reliably informed, follows the appointment of former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Mr. A.B.K. Martin Amidu, as Special Prosecutor, which announcement continues to receive massive endorsement from Ghanaians.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Mr. Amidu as Special Prosecutor has found huge approval by majority of Ghanaians who passionately want to see a serious crackdown on the perpetration of corruption by public office holders in the country.
The decision has also gained applause from key elements of the opposition NDC who at a point had ventilated strong effusions that the office was being established to witch-hunt its members.
Unfortunately for the NDC, the nomination of Martin Amidu’s as Special Prosecutor has ignited a flame of love and affection for party faithful within its rank-and-file resulting in the defection of 138 hitherto hardcore NDC members to the governing NPP.
According to them, President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Martin Amidu, who is an NDC member, has given enough credence to the President’s widely professed accolade of being allergic to corruption in all its shapes and forms and speaks volumes of his commitment to root it out our social fabric.
The defected NDC members, who sprung from within the Takoradi metropolis and its environs- specifically NDC branches in Apremdu, Apowa, and Agona Nkwanta cited the President Akufo-Addo’s stance against corruption coupled with the ruling NPP’s performance over the past year as key reasons for their decision.
The spokesperson of the defectors, Mr. Kojo Mbir, told journalists yesterday that they are full of praise for government of President Akufo-Addo on the successful and effective implementation of the government’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) educational programme as well as its performance on the economy since its assumed office a year ago.
According to him, Ghanaians follow political parties to solve our problems when they win power, so far, the people of Ghana have felt what the Akufo-Addo government has done in just a year in office.”
“We have had extensive meetings and have come to this conclusion. If along the line, this government loses focus and fails to deliver, we can decide to leave them, but for now President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has shown that we can really trust him to lead Ghana out of our challenges,” he added.
On Thursday, January 11, 2018, President Akufo-Addo nominated Martin A.B.K. Amidu as the Special Prosecutor, pending the approval of Parliament.
