THE troubles of former Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Ghana Education Service (GES), Rev. Jonathan Bettey, who has been allegedly accused of forging his promotional letter to attain his current rank are not over yet.
The latest dilemma of Rev. Bettey follows the move by members of the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), a civil society organisation (CSO), petitioning the Inspector General of Police, Mr. David Asante-Apeatu, to arrest and prosecute the accused person of wrongdoing.
The Head of Education of ILAPI, Mr. Eric Owusum, who led members to the Serious Crime Registry at the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of Ghana Police Service in Accra yesterday, appealed to the IGP to launch a thorough investigations into the circumstances under which Mr. Bettey allegedly forged his promotional letter.
The two-page petition, which was copied to Today, reads in part, “we wish to bring to the attention of your outfit concerning a fraudulent act that has taken place within the Ghana Education Service.”
The petition noted that the acting Deputy Director General of GES, Mr. Anthony Boateng, revealed that Rev. Bettey does not deserve the salary he draws from the state because he has not yet attained the level of a deputy director of GES, as he holds himself.
Mr. Boateng disclosed that the potentially criminal act, according to the petition on Friday, January 5, 2018 after Rev. Bettey told Kasapa FM in Accra that his reassignment from Accra to Cape Coast was politically motivated.
The petition mentioned that Mr. Boateng said this alleged criminal conduct of Rev. Bettey necessitated his transfer from the headquarters of the GES to the Central regional office of the Service.
The members of ILAPI in the petition asserted “we are of the view that staff transfer should not be a tool for punishing a person who has committed a criminal offense.”
According to the petition, “the GES is a public institution tasked with the responsibility of training future generations to become responsible citizens, and it is very unfortunate for activities of forgery to be happening among its top officials.”
“As a public institute, we think there has been collusion among some GES members regarding the promotion of the former PRO which needs to be investigated to enhance equity, justice and instill confidence in the system,” it opined.
By virtue of these, the petitioners said: “we are persuading your office to institute an investigation into the matter, and bring all those involved to justice.”
The petition pledged the ILAPI’s unflinching support to the police outfit in bringing finality to this matter.
