Deputy Western Regional Minister, Mrs. Eugenia Gifty Kusi, has inaugurated new pumping machines to replace obsolete ones at the Ghana Water Company’s (GWCL’s) Daboase treatment plant in the Wassa East District of the Western Region.
The equipment were two normal high lift pumps, wash water pumps, blowers, raw water pumps and a control panel.
The installation marked the first phase of a broader project that government through the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation was to improve the supply of potable water to households and industries within the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.
The project cost $25 million between the government and Intermic Ghana Limited to provide the Daboase Treatment Plant, the Inchaban Water Plants and Bosumase Water Station with new pumping equipment.
The project is expected to be completed within two months.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Mrs. Kusi indicated that the next phase of the project will be the installation of pumping equipment for the Inchaban Water Plants and the Bosumase Water Station to serve as a backup for the Daboase Treatment Plant.
According to the minister, the Daboase Water Treatment Plant, which is the primary source of potable water to Sekondi-Takoradi, was designed to supply 6 million gallons of water a day. The reason for the shortage in supply has been attributed to the activities of illegal mining on the Pra River, low river inflows, lack of regular maintenance and aging equipment.
She was optimistic that when completed water supply to the metropolis would significantly improve.
“With the procurement of these pumping equipment at Daboase and Bosumase, it was expected that the supply of water will improve to 6 million and above and Inchaban will also rise from 2 million gallons of water a day to three million,” she added.
