Interational Literacy Day was yesterday launched in Accra with a call on all key stakeholders to emphasise the need for literacy programmes to be adapted in a digital world.
The launch, which was facilitated by Engage Now Africa (ENA), was on the theme: “Literacy in the Digital World.”
It was attended by the Director for Non-Formal Education Division, Mr. Francis Asumadu, Deputy Minister for Education, Mrs. Barbara Asher Ayisi, Country Representative for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr. Edmund Quartey, and Director of Africa West Area Welfare of Church of Jesus of Latter-Day Saints, Elder John Koranteng.
The United Nations (UN) International Literacy Day annually falls on September 8, and it aimed at raising people’s awareness of and concern for literacy issues in the world.
In a welcome address, Country Director of Engage Now Africa (ENA), Mrs. Cecilia Amankwah, called on all and sundry to create the enabling environment to allow the less-privileged to fully benefit from the opportunities available to all.
“The empowering strength of education is what enables us to take charge over our destinies. We take joy in our work, believing that the family is the basic unit of society and our global community,” she added.
She noted that the ENA acknowledges the relevance of gender equity in attaining the right to education for all.
In this success, according to Mrs. Amankwah, her outfit has created a successful education and adult literacy model that included students’ manuals and study guides to teach people how to read and become self-reliant.
Mrs. Amankwah thus pleaded with the ministry of education to appeal to the telecommunication networks to expedite efforts to spread internet connectivity across the country.
She noted that Ghana must work harder to achieve the sustainable development goal to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
For his part, Deputy Greater Regional Minister, Mrs. Elizabeth K.T. Sackey, commended management and staff of Engage Now Africa for the immense contribution they made towards creating awareness on the need to place more priorities on adult, youth and education.
