Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) says it has lost about $5.4 million dollars through battery thefts at their cell sites between 2014 and 2017.

The figure is exclusive of the millions of dollars the company has as well lost through fibre cuts in the same period.

In 2017 alone, the telecom company disclosed that it recorded 494 fibre cuts across the country.

The situation though worrying has however, not prevented them from further investing more millions into their operations in the country.

Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, who made these revelations, said her outfit was investing a total of US$144.5 million to expand its operations to improve the quality of its services for their clients in the country.

She explained that this involved increasing network availability and modernisation, service innovation and operational efficiency.

She was speaking during a meeting with news editors in the Ashanti Region to brief them about goings-on in the company.

The meeting dubbed: Editors’ Forum, is an annual gathering of MTN top shots and editors in the various regions of the country.

Mrs. Lumor noted that MTN Ghana’s contribution to the national economy has been substantial, employing about half-of-a million people.

According to her, the company had funded 142 development projects to assist in the transformation of lives in the country.

The projects were in the areas of education and health infrastructure, provision of water and sanitation facilities, skills development and capacity building.

One other area where the company has been receiving loads of complaints is the Mobile Money operation where some unscrupulous persons have resulted to defrauding unsuspecting patrons.

Even though they admitted that more education was needed in fighting the Mobile Money fraud which they have started, they also advised persons not to divulge their PINs to any other person.
