GTUC staff schooled on emotional problems

Staff and management of the Graduate School of the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) have undergone training on creating emotional safety at the workplace.

The training was facilitated by the Ghana’s first EQ Coach and the Regional Director (Africa) of the Social Emotional Development Institute, James Kwesi Addison on 28th September, 2017 at the Graduate School Conference room in Accra.

In attendance were over 6 units’ heads who are also teaching staff, and 18 administrative officers.

The occasion was graced by the Vice-President and the Registrar of GTUC and Mrs. Comfort Oduro-Nyarko, the Chief Executive Officer of Makola Institute and a recipient of the ‘National Women in Banking and Finance Awards.

In a brief interview after the workshop, the EQ Coach observed that emotional problems in the workplace have serious effects not only on the individual but also on productivity and competitiveness of working environment.

He further noted that emotional safety in the workplace directly affects employee performance and rates of illness, absenteeism and staff turnover.

To him, unmanaged emotional issues and absenteeism can lead to substantial productivity losses.

The social entrepreneur used the occasion to unveil how the ‘Social Emotional Development Institute was  helping employers create emotional safety.

He hinted that in January 2017, SEDi launched the Emotional Safety Programme within West Africa and today represents a unique international continuing professional development (CPD) support approach to creating workplace emotional safety.

In a closing remarks the head of administration, Mrs. Vera Grahim urged the public, private and third sector employers to partner with SEDi to embed a tangible and expert infrastructure to create Emotional Safety at work.
