Ethics Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will soon begin formal investigations into match fixing, bribery and corruption allegations by some club officials and players in the just-ended Ghana Premier League season.
A statement from the GFA on their official website disclosed that the decision by the Ethics Committee to open investigations into the allegations was to protect the sanctity of the league in the wake of local media reports of inducements by some club officials to compromise matches.
The Ethics Committee revealed that match officials who have made general and specific corruption and match fixing allegations and accused individuals will be given formal invitations to assist in unravelling the myriad match fixing allegations that have plagued the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
With several teams fighting to avoid relegation in the league, match officials, referees and in some cases players have all been alleged to have either negotiated their way in winning and losing matches.
Owner of Tema Youth, Mr. Wilfred Osei Kweku, recently accused Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, owner of Elmina Sharks, of bribing Liberty Professionals and AshGold to win in order to avoid dropping to the relegation zone; an allegation, Dr. Nduom has advised his lawyers to sue Mr. Osei Kwaku to prove.
Other officials have also been alleged to have bargained with other clubs to play soft against some teams: a situation the GFA has promised to leave no stone unturned in its pursuit to unravel the truth.
The Ethics Committee has further asked the media and the general public to even on condition of anonymity to provide relevant information to assist in investigations.
