Bonwire Kente Weavers Association (MKWA) in the Ashanti Region has called on the government to ban the importation of Chinese printed kente into the country.
According to them, importation of the Chinese printed kente was collapsing the kente weaving business locally.
Speaking in an interview with Today yesterday via telephone, Secretary of the Association, Mr Asante Smith, urged the government to protect the local industries which provide jobs for many youth in the country.
According to him, kente was fast losing its value because of the printed ‘fake’ kente from China.
Mr Smith said the government must also build a thread factory in the country which can produce more thread.
He added that high cost of the thread and the unstable price from the market was killing their business.
