Real Madrid equalled the world record of scoring in consecutive matches set at 73 by Brazilian club Santos in 1963 when Borja Mayoral hit the back of the net in Sunday’s 3-1 triumph at Real Sociedad.
Real’s run began at Real Sociedad’s Anoeta Stadium on April 30, 2016, with Gareth Bale providing the only goal of the game.
No defence has been able to shut out Real’s attack in any competition since Manchester City did so in their 0-0 Champions League semi-final first leg at the Etihad Stadium on April 24, 2016.
Earlier this year, Zinedine Zidane’s side set a new Spanish record, beating the Barcelona side that had scored in 44 straight games between 1942 and 1944. Real also overtook Bayern Munich’s European record of 61 consecutive matches.
Los Blancos have now equalled the all-time best set by a Santos side led by Brazil legend Pele. Santos’ run saw them win the Brazilian league in 1962 as well as the Libertadores Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. In that stretch, Santos won 52 games, lost seven and drew 14 while scoring 245 goals, 85 of which were scored by Pele.
Winners of La Liga and the Champions League last season, Real have scored 198 goals in 73 games, with 49 coming from the club’s all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, 21 from Karim Benzema and 20 from Alvaro Morata, who joined Chelsea this summer.
